Festo developed a flexible robot that uses artificial intelligence to infer how to manipulate items with your fingers. This self-learning technique is very important for building robots that can perform original tasks in the workplace, at home, and anywhere else.
 
BionicSoftHand uses trial and error to determine how tasks should be performed, but without the tedious, time-consuming manual process. Once the engineer reloads the robot to the net, the 3D camera and depth sensor create a virtual copy of the object, and then the robot's artificial intelligence runs countless simulations to help it quickly figure out what to do. Artificial intelligence is only part of the project, and the robot feels soft, which means it can safely interact with humans. The fingers of the robot are made of 3D textile knit fabric, equipped with a tactile sensor and a flexible circuit board with bellows inside, which can be moved by inflation and deflation. The pneumatic shaft at the bottom of the thumb and forefinger allows them to move from side to side, while there are more than twenty proportional piezoelectric valves on the wrist that allow the entire robot to function properly. According to Festo, the robot's construction allows it to have 12 degrees of freedom and can manipulate objects dexterously.
